Alibaba’s international arm has launched an upgraded version of its AI-powered translation tool, Marco MT, which it claims outperforms popular translation services from Google, DeepL, and ChatGPT. This bold claim is backed by an evaluation conducted by the Flores benchmark framework, positioning Marco MT as a top player in the AI translation space.

This updated translation tool is particularly useful for businesses selling products internationally. Over 500,000 merchants on Alibaba’s platforms already use the tool to translate product listings into multiple languages, bridging language gaps and improving customer reach across different markets.

What Sets Marco MT Apart?

One of the standout features of Marco MT is its reliance on large language models (LLMs). These models enable the tool to provide more accurate translations by understanding contextual clues like industry jargon or cultural nuances. According to Kaifu Zhang, vice president of Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group, the goal is to help merchants improve their performance on the platform by offering precise translations that resonate with local buyers.

For example, translating a Chinese phrase that describes a slipper literally into English could confuse potential buyers. Marco MT’s strength lies in understanding such phrases and delivering a contextually relevant translation that improves customer trust and likelihood to purchase.

Supported Languages and Market Impact

Marco MT supports translations in 15 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, English, Spanish, and Turkish, among others. The tool is already making waves, especially in emerging markets, where Alibaba expects significant growth. Developing countries make up half of the top 20 active users of the tool on Alibaba.com, which is a testament to the growing demand for cross-border e-commerce solutions.

This tool’s capability comes at a crucial time for Alibaba, especially as more Chinese companies are looking to expand globally. The rise of Chinese e-commerce giants like PDD Holdings’ Temu, Shein, and TikTok has intensified competition, pushing Alibaba to innovate and offer tools that help merchants succeed overseas.

AI-Driven E-Commerce and Its Future

The growing reliance on AI, especially for e-commerce translation, is poised to reshape the global retail landscape. With Marco MT, Alibaba aims to make international shopping festivals like Double 11 even more accessible to global consumers by ensuring that product listings are translated with authenticity and precision.

Alibaba’s international unit, which operates platforms like AliExpress and Lazada, has already seen impressive growth, with a 32% year-on-year sales increase. This contrasts sharply with its domestic e-commerce platforms like Taobao and Tmall, which saw a slight dip in sales.

As the e-commerce giant continues its global push, tools like Marco MT could be critical in driving future growth, especially in new and emerging markets.Ready to scale your business with AI-driven solutions?
